Next generation of Communication fiber optic- How to find best solutions for multiful-core fiber splicing

-- At present, is single-mode fiber still the mainstream application of fiber transmission?

-- Yes, multi-core fiber is a more advanced attempt. There are some related applications at present, which are not mainstream yet, but will be possible in the next generation.

Recently, The research group of Fudan University has made an important breakthrough in the research of multi-core fiber fusion technology.

In order to solve the problem of optical communication capacity expansion in the future, the accepted technical solution to improve single-fiber capacity is to use space division multiplexing technology. Multi-core fiber, multi-mode fiber or multi-core multi-mode fiber is the inevitable development trend of optical communication transmission.

Multicore fiber (MCF) share the same cladding compared to conventional single-core fiber. This high-density, multi-channel structure has advantages of low production cost, space saving, and high transmission capacity. Multi-core fiber has important application value in space division multiplexing optical communication system, data center connection, inter-chip communication, next generation fiber amplifier, optical sensing, quantum technology and so on.

The research on new multi-core fiber technology is one of the key points to solve the problem of future communication capacity expansion.
However, up to now, the international design of multi-core fiber is still not unified standard, the high-tech companies in the manufacture of multi-core fiber in the number of fiber core, fiber core arrangement, fiber core size, core spacing, refractive index distribution and other aspects are different, which increases the difficulty of fusion splicing between different types of multi-core fiber.

Multi-core fiber tapering technology is proposed by Fudan Team, including forward tapering and reverse tapering, which can be used to adjust the core spacing of multi-core fiber and control the mode characteristics of multi-core simultaneously.

Based on the technology of reverse tapering of multi-core fiber, by matching the core spacing and mode field diameter of dissimilar multi-core fiber. The reaserch team can accurately prepare a core-spacing converter with low loss and low crosstalk for two types of multi-core fiber with mismatched core spacing.

Two isomorphic heterogeneous multi-core optical fibers are spliced together with converter respectively by Shinho S-12PM Fusion splicer. To get lower loss.
