Maintenance of Fiber Fusion Splicer
1: How often should I calibrate the fusion machine?
It all depends on the condition of the equipment. If it's operated properly, you probably won't even need to calibrate it. Of course, you will need to change the consumable parts, such as electrodes or battery. Some fusion machines have the program reset function, in the same way as the mobile phone, that is, you can reset the machine to the original factory version, but for the hardware there is no reset function. If the equipment is well maintained, properly used, most of the time it will not need recalibration.
2: What is the proper maintenance schedule?
Most of the time, you just need to keep the machine clean. Remember that the fusion machine combines optical, mechanical, and electrical technologies. The optical parts are very fragile and more easily damaged. They can also be easily contaminated, as dust or objects stick to the refector mirror. And that will cause a malfunction. So, the first thing you should check is that the refector mirror are clean. But it's also not a good idea to clean the refector mirror frequently, since excessive cleaning can cause permanent damage. Bottom line: When you see objects or a lot of dust on the mirror, you can clean them carefully.
3: What if there is a misalignment of the optical fiber?
It is normal for the fusion machine to sometimes not align the optical fiber correctly.Fiber misalignment is one of the primary causes of fusion splicing failures. It occurs when the fibers are not properly aligned during the splicing process. This can result in higher signal loss, increased return loss, and reduced fiber strength When this happens, technicians usually go to the Main menu and do the alignment manually. Now, if the problem recurs, it is necessary to look for the cause. First, check if the malfunction is caused by objects or dust on the Groove V. If this happens, the fiber will not be automatically aligned. Even after manual alignment, the failure will occur because there is some dirt hindering the process. But the dust is still there, this problem will appear again, how simple is that. Conclusion: Clean the V Groove first, then do manual alignment (in some cases, manual alignment is not necessary) and the problem will be solved.
Overall, good maintenance and proper upkeep of your fusion splicer can effectively prolong the life of your splicer and ensure that your connections meet specifications. Your fusion splicer deserves to have good maintenance and proper upkeep. It is one of the hardest working pieces of equipment on your job site – besides you!!
