The Difference Between Optical Fiber Cold Splicing and Optical Fiber Fusion

When installing a fiber optic network, connectors are required to connect both ends of the fiber optic cable. Common splicing methods include optical fiber cold splicing and optical cable hot fusion splicing.

1. Advantages and disadvantages of fiber optic cold splicing

Fiber cold splicing refers to using special tools to mechanically connect two optical fibers. Its advantages include:
Simple operation and easy to master;
No electricity required;
Materials that will not damage optical fibers;
Suitable for on-site construction and other environments.

However, fiber cold splicing also has the following disadvantages:
A higher loss will reduce signal quality;
Connection quality is affected by the environment;

Time is longer.


2. Advantages and disadvantages of optical fiber fusion splicing
Optical fiber fusion splicing refers to the use of special equipment to splice two optical fibers. Its advantages include:
The connection is stable and reliable;
Low loss and good signal quality;
Suitable for long-distance transmission.

However, optical fiber fusion splicing also has the following disadvantages:
Higher cost;
Professional equipment and technical personnel are required;
It is not convenient for on-site construction and other environments.

3. How to choose the connector method that suits you?

According to the actual situation and needs of the project, it is very important to choose the appropriate joint method.

If the construction conditions are harsh and the network needs to be quickly constructed on site, it is recommended to use optical fiber cold splicing. Of course, when there are requirements for maximum bandwidth, minimum loss, and maximum reliability, optical cable  fusion splicing should be selected.

In general, both joint methods have their advantages and disadvantages, and they must be chosen flexibly according to different situations to achieve the best results.
